This summer we welcomed a new food truck to Kennedy Plaza, Sarcastic Sweets. Food truck of Johnson & Wales graduate, Nina Reed, it specializes in tasty baked goods, in flavors that you won’t see any where else. I sat down with Nina to welcome her and find out a bit more about her truck.
Tell me a little bit about you and the type of food Sarcastic Sweets sells.
Sarcastic Sweets carries cupcakes, cookies, brownies, drinks, and sometimes cake pop bites. We also a have a full menu available of items that we don’t carry on the truck that includes wedding cakes, full size cakes and many other items. You can look forward to us having new refreshing drinks once we get our generator; items such as smoothies, iced coffee, hot coffee, tea, chocolate milk, as well as hot chocolate and cider.
What was the inspiration for your adult cupcakes with the little bit of booze?
My inspiration for cocktail, wine, and beer cupcakes came from my love of bartending and everything I learned at Johnson & Wales University. After graduation, I went home to Alaska and worked at a bakery, and also a liquor store. I learned a lot about wine and liquors and decided to incorporate fun new flavors into my desserts. Because, really, who doesn’t like a boozy cupcake or bourbon walnut pie?
What made you want to open a food truck?
I wanted to open a food truck because I felt that it would be the most sensible step before a bakery. In this industry, you need to build a following of clientele before you open a store. Once you have a steady following, you open up a bakery so that you’ll be successful. Also, by having a food truck first will make me able to reach multiple markets once my shop is open, by being mobile and versatile.
What’s your connection to Providence?
My connection to Providence was made when I came here to get a baking and pastry degree from Johnson & Wales. I transferred from the Miami campus to the Providence Campus and I liked it much better. When I came back for school for my senior year, I didn’t want to leave, but had to get to work right after graduation. So, I went home Alaska to work but eventually moved back here. I liked it so much, and my fiancé is from NY, so this was a happy medium location for both of us. The food truck demographic here in Rhode Island has been very successful for my business thus far. We try to participate in as many events as we can to grow our brand and display our many other bakery items.
What kind of items can we look forward to this fall?
Some of the items you can look forward to in the fall are autumn cookies, spiced cakes, apple crisps, apple pies, as well as pumpkin everything and sweet potato pie.
Sarcastic Sweets often joins us at our weekly Burnside Music Series + Beer Garden. Join us and treat yourself to something delicious.
